The Influence of Cutting Parameters on Tool Wear in Ductile Machining of Soda Lime Glass

Soda lime glass milling is a challenging task due to its brittle nature. Due to its high performance applications research work on ductile mode machining of brittle material focused on criteria to achieve ductile mode, mainly cutting parameters and cutting tool features. Investigation of tool wear in ductile machining of brittle material with uncoated tool is comparatively new field of research and a complex task. In order to assess machinability of soda lime glass using uncoated carbide tool the effects of cutting parameters on tool wear are needed to be investigated and analyzed. The aim of the present research is to analyze and develop mathematical models for tool flank wear in machining of soda-lime glass using uncoated tungsten carbide tool. Models were developed considering the input parameters such as- spindle speed, feed rate and axial depth of cut using Box-Behnken Design of Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Results showed that effect of feed rate is more significant followed by depth of cut and spindle speed on flank wear Vb. Moreover, spindle speed 29,331 rpm (251.2 m/min), feed rate 5 mm/min and depth of cut 10μm, was predicted to generate minimal flank wear, Vb of 142 μm with 100 % desirability
