In this paper, author considers three schemes to reduce the fault number caused by lightning on transmission lines. Three schemes considered in this research include increase in the insulator string length, surge arrester installation, and surge arrester installation in combination with increase in the insulator string length. A new algorithm is proposed to determine the best scheme which guarantees the number of faults caused by lightning satisfies the required value and its investment is the cheapest in them. With a fore-given required value of the fault number caused by lightning, this algorithm indicates the number of tower positions needing to improve and improving methods at those towers in detail.
