FACTORS OF FAMILY BURDEN IN SCHIZOPHRENIA

Introduction: Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder. It is characterized by disorders in thinking, perception, mood and behavior, while at the same time there may be a reduction in functionality resulting in severe disability and requires lifelong care that significantly burdens the family and public health.Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the factors that contribute to the burden on families / caregivers of people suffering from schizophrenia.Methodology: The methodology followed included the search of research data, which were collected through electronic databases PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline, ResearchGate.Results: The factors that lead to the onset of family burden in people with schizophrenia concern both the patient and the disease themselves, as well as family caregivers. A review of the literature confirmed the hypothesis that long-term care of patients with schizophrenia increases the weight of family members / carers, adversely affecting their mental health. This can increase the stress of family members / caregivers as well as reduce the care provided. Family therapy and the necessary psychosocial interventions in combination with medication, seem to contribute to the more effective management of the family burden, to the optimal stay of the patient in the community and to his functional integration.Conclusions: Knowledge of the family burden of people with schizophrenia can help in planning and implementing rehabilitation and support programs for the patient and his family
