The Mediating Effect of Personal Factors on the Perceived Level of Burnout among Secondary School Teachers in the Region of Achaia, West Greece

During the last six years, teachers in Greece, experienced a dramatic reduction in their earnings. The Maslach Burnout Inventory, as adapted for teachersGr in Greece, was used to assess the perceived level of burnout among secondary school teachers in the region of Achaia, West Greece. The results indicate high level of professional burnout, emotional exhaustion, and personal accomplishment, but low depersonalization in the teachers. There was a significant effect of personal factors on the perceived level of burnout. Age, length of service and number of children, had a moderating effect on burnout levels. Compared to men, women expressed higher level of burnout. The results indicate that teachers had high levels of personal accomplishment, while depersonalization was higher in teachers with less than five years of service. It would be interesting to further investigate the changes in the elements of work burnout in different subjects and levels of education
