Dust can greatly alter the light emitted by galaxies, causing galaxies to become redder and dimmer. The different tracers that we can use to estimate the fundamental physical properties of galaxies are affected by this, making dust a mayor and direct impediment to our attempts to understand the formation and evolution of galaxies. To overcome this, major efforts have been undertaken to develop new methods to correct the panchromatic emission of galaxies for the presence of dust.
