This paper is intended as an introduction to the dossier on the multi-material statues of Christ that is here published, and which consists of the articles by Carla Bino and Sara Carreño on Italy and Galicia respectively. It provides a broader interpretive framework for the study, assessing concepts and tools developed in diverse disciplinary fields to restore the ways in which medieval beholders perceived and received these objects within patterns of affective piety
