The figure of notary Viviano is investigated through the analysis of his activity attested in Venice by numerous documents between 1204 and 1223. The notary appears to have been the first lay official employed in ducal chancellery. In particular he is the principal writer between 1209 and 1217 of the oldest of Libri Pactorum, the most important Venetian cartulary, as well as writer of other documents for the Municipality, including a treaty concluded in Aquileia in 1218. It’s to be emphasized his commitment to the production of two passionaries for the church of San Marco, then Palatine chapel.
