In Cavafy’s poetry, scholars (but also Cavafy himself) seem to distinguish poems in three different categories: the philosophical, the hedonistic, and the historical. Most of the time, however, it happens that a poem belongs to a specific area because it is more characteristic or we just have the feeling that it is superior, while in the poem there are elements that belong to both or both “areas” at the same time.C.
