University Department of Chemistry, Saurashtra University, Bhavnagar Manuscript received 27 August 1974; revised 18 March 1975; accepted 4 April 1975 2-Hydroxy-5-methyl-benzophenone (α) naphthil (HMBN) is found to be a chelating agent for Cu2+, Ni2+ and Co2+ ions. It gives a reddish brown bis-chelate (\(p\)H 10.0-10.8) with Cu2+, a red bis-chelate (\(p\)H 9.0-9.8) with Ni2+ and a green bis-chelate (\(p\)H 10.8-11.5) with Co2+. The composition of these chelates have been described on the basis of their elemental analysis. The complexes of Cu2+ and Co2+ are paramagnetic and the nickel complex is diamagnetic
