Nutritional behavior of people with diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome belongs to the functional disorders of the digestive system, and the main symptoms of this disease are pain associated with evacuation and diarrhea, constipation or diarrheas interchangeable with constipations depending on the form. It is a affliction that negatively affects the quality and comfort of life of the patient, so it is important to buffering the symptoms or completely eliminate them. The aim of the study was to assess the nutritional behavior of people with diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome. The survey was carried out anonymously using a proprietary survey among internet users who are belonging to support groups on one of the social networking sites. The study group consisted of 144 people. Respondents were asked to answer questions about age, sex, height and weight, education, and were asked about the rough date of diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome and the existing form of IBS. The next questions concerned the methods used to ease on IBS symptoms, the amount and frequency of meals and liquids consumed, the type of heat treatment, supplements used, the type of fat consumed, and the frequency of consumption of certain food products. Based on the analysis, it was shown that people diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome mostly knew and used ways to relieve IBS symptoms. The number and frequency of meals, types of fat and heat treatment techniques used were in line with the recommendations. Subjects drank too little fluid. The relationship between the parameters studied and some eating behaviors has been demonstrated. Patients diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome mostly present nutritional behaviors in line with the recommendations in this disease entity, however, further work on the nutritional education of these people is necessary
