Addition Compounds of Phosphorus Halides with Tertiary Amines

Solid (1 : 1) and (1 : 3) addition compounds of phosphorus (Ill) chloride and bromide and (1 : 1) phosphorus (V) chloride and bromido with pyridine, (\(\beta\)- and \(\gamma\)-picolines, quinoline, isoquinoline and piperidine have been prepared. Infrared spectra of the complexes indicate the coordination of nitrogen atom of the base to phosphorus atom in the complexes of phosphorus (III) halides while phosphorus (V) halide complexes are found in be ionic in nature
