Department of Chemistry, Government Postgraduate College, Shivpuri (M.P.) Manuscript received 17 October 1973 ; accepted 23 May 1974 The bromination of p-phenylacetophenone has been found to be acid catalysed, dependent on the concentration of ketone aind independent of the concentration of bromine. Reaction proceeds both via neutral and conjugate acid species. Experimental rates have been confirmed by those determined from ionic strength data. Detailed kinetic study using concepts as solvent effect, solvent isotope effect, Arrhenius parameters indicate the bimolecular nucleophilic attack of water on conjugate acid species
