Ukrainian Folk-rock at the End of the 20th – the Beginning of the 21st Century: Music Ethnoprojects by Skriabin and Taras Chubai

The purpose of the research is to consider the formation of rock (folk-rock) culture in Ukraine; to outline the roles of A. Kuzmenko and T. Chubai in the process of reconstruction of ancient Ukrainian lyrics and melodies; to analyze the lyrics; to characterize the alternative reproduction of music material (projects «Euterpa», «Our Christmas» and «Our partisans»). The research methodology consisted in a combination of artistic and textual analysis of Ukrainian ethnic songs in their rock adaptation (on the metaphorical, figurative and thematic levels) and the method of reconstruction of folklore material; the historical method, which consisted in the diachronic overview of rock music and its subgenres. The scientific novelty consists in the expanded complex analysis of the three abovementioned ethno-music projects and alternative folk streams in the Ukrainian music space, which are considered from the scientific point of view for the first time. Conclusions. During the Soviet era, music was a controlled commodity and was used as a tool for indoctrination of the population; the repertoire of Ukrainian folk music performers and ensembles was restricted. After the declaration of independence, interest to the Ukrainian folk song was resumed. As a result of the analysis of three ethnoprojects, created by Skriabin, Taras Chubai and a group of vocalists, it can be stated that the material collected and presented in its rock adaptation demonstrates organic synthesis of Ukrainian ancient melos and contemporary electronic music. The issue of folk-rock and modern adaptations of authentic music is extremely interesting, brand new and open to interdisciplinary research
