The article deals with the conditions for the transformation of the legal status of the Registered Cossacks in the XVIII century. The gradual process of liquidation of the Ukrainian Hetman state and the final integration of the Ukrainian society and the Cossacks into the imperial structure of the society of the absolute monarchy - the Russian Empire - is illustrated. The research is based on the legal acts of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the kings of the Polish–Lithuanian State, the Ukrainian Hetmans and hetman authorities, treaties and international treaties, as well as on the acts of the Moscow tsarists and the legislation of the Russian Empire.
