ВЕРБАЛЬНИЙ ВИЯВ СКРОМНОСТІ В РЕАКЦІЯХ НА ПОЗИТИВНООЦІННІ МАНІПУЛЕМИ

The article is devoted to the study of the verbal expression of modesty in responsive utterances to manipulative utterances of positive evaluation. It describes the linguistic means used by an object of manipulative influence to understate his / her achievements and deny complimentary utterances addressed to him / her. The ways of etiquette failure to take utterances of positive evaluation in manipulative discourse are highlighted. They are indications of an exaggerated positive evaluation, its denial, and understatement, ascertaining a fact of complimenting, exposing of the manipulator’s tactics, requests to stop compliment making, the expression of surprise, confusion, distrust and false indignation, repeated questions. Communicative techniques with the help of which an object of manipulative influence shows his / her modesty are described. The themes of the utterances of positive evaluation, on which an addressee responds by deterioration of his / her merits, are found out. The reasons underlying the analyzed type of verbal behavior are determined. They are exaggerated evaluations, speaker’s insincerity, insufficient addressee’s self-concept, his / her evasion from the execution of operations which a manipulating speaker expects, and the reluctance to attract undue attention to him / herself, to cause envy. Gender, age and status characteristics of communicants, the mentality of the Ukrainians and the specificity of a communicative situation are taken into account
