Four new cyanine dyes have been prepared by the condensation of β-naplithaquinaidine etbiodide with p-diethylaminobenznidehyde, p-toluquinaldine ethiodide, 6-ethoxyquinaldine ethiodide and p-tolaquinoline ethiodide, and their optical, photographic and other properties studied. The effect of the change of molecular weight, structure and substitsents on the sensitising power of these and other related compounds has been discussed
