In this note, we discuss a particular family of binomial sums, which can be calculated using simple matrix algebra and roots of unity. The method presented here may be interesting for undergraduate students who wish to develop their ability in the framework of combinatorics. We also mention recent intriguing results combining square roots of unity and binomial identities
