In this paper we have formulated and solved the problem of determining optimal sizes of drum shafts for general-purposes lifting cranes, providing the minimum weight of the shaft if the allowable strength and stiffness. 4 design variants of shafts, which are the most promising from the point of view of their use in practice, are considered. The sizes of the optimal variants of the drum shafts of cranes of different load capacity, modes and operating conditions are given
