The main scientific approaches to the improvement and modernization of higher education have been revealed and characterized in the article. The first approach was found to consist in focusing attention of scholars on world outlook aspects of education which they consider in the context of world civilization processes. The second approach was determined to involve consideration of higher school as one of the most effective ways of entering world of culture by a human. The attention is focused on the fact that education is an active catalyst of cultural changes and transformations in social life and in a person. The third approach is related to the social function of higher education, which involves, on the one hand, the promotion of a person professional self-realization, on the other - the training of specialists that meet modern requirements and are able to carry out professional activities successfully. The fourth approach was found to be based on the ideas of humanization, personal orientation of high school. Special attention has been paid to the development of future specialists
