Reinterpretation of the Andy Worhol Phenomenon in the Poster Making by Young Ukrainian Designers

The purpose is to investigate the reinterpretations of the phenomenon of work of the founder of commercial pop art, the artist of Lemki origin, Andy Warhol, in the Ukrainian youth poster, using the works of design students. Methods. The research is based on applying a systemic approach in combination with comparative, art history and source studies methods. Results. Being in high demand for ethnic self-identification, the artistic youth of Ukraine turns to create posters, fast-acting ideologically oriented works of art, dedicating them to ethnic Ukrainians who have made a significant contribution to the development of world culture and civilization. Andy Warhol, extraordinary and creative, is perceived by the students as one of the reference points for measuring the quota of Ukrainian culture worldwide. The iconological analysis of Warhol’s phenomenon within the visual solutions of the poster demonstrates, next to traditional signs and symbols originating from the depths of Ukrainian folk culture, undeniable signs of postmodern artistic thinking, the continuity of the artistic techniques of the “king of pop art”, references to previous historical experience, a tendency towards polystylism of figurative construction and text support. It is noted that despite the imitation of a prominent representative of the art of the second half of the 20th century, the essential content of the Ukrainian student poster retains a sharp contemporary feel. The analysed works, executed according to the programme of current tasks in design disciplines, were tested at all-Ukrainian and international exhibitions. The scientific novelty is the analysis of the use by students of the graphic design department of an art figure of Ukrainian origin, the legislator of “commercial pop art” for ethnic self identification through imitation of his artistic techniques.
