Dinamika Persepsi Nilai Luhur Kejawaan di Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta

This research is meant to trace the shift of Javanese values as understood by the Yogyanese. As a special region within the Indonesian state administration, Yogyakarta is perceived as a multi-cultural and cosmopolitan domain in which the main tag are uniqueness, tolerant, and pluralistic. This image looks good in political rhetoric as in daily conversation. The outcome of the research exposed the strong opinion among the Yogyanese that there is a massive shift of local value in the socio-cultural changing process. This is none other than a reflection of tension and dynamic between maintaining the above image and the will to preserve of the exalted values; values that are considered as the core of Yogyakarta identity. On the other hand, there a conviction that Yogyakarta cultural heritage is flexure in dealing with this shift, nonetheless it is along with the concern of the modernity swaping effect over those values, the rapidity of demographical re-arrangement – by the increasing number of the immigrants, and stronger politics of identity, including religious identity in the public sphere. Observing this within the larger context of national polity and transnational phenomenon, in this paper the researchers argued that the prospect for Yogyakarta to dealing with this dynamic is promising if it get ahead to maintain the equilibrium among those tensions and if it imaginative enough to manage creatively the relationship, including interfaith relationship among elements in the society. Through this dynamic the meaning of “Distinct Yogyakarta” is in fact still in the process of constructing and reconstructing, and all of those perceptions, nostalgia, and exalted values are refashioned in order to produce new transformed values. All in all, this should be considered a transitional process in which the end-production is still in waiting
