For a variety of applications, such as shipbuilding or automotive, a variety of materials is used in order to meet certain design constraints or certification limitations. Within ship building for international waters, different design codes are distinguished for civil and naval use. While the SOLAS (safety of life at seas) ship code and the HSC (high speed craft) code have strict regulation in the use of composite materials, some naval rules enable such materials already leading to ship designs e.g. the Visby or Zumwalt class.
