Galactic plane observations are particularly problematic with radio interferometers. Extended sources and the Galactic diffuse emission make the entire imaging process much more difficult than that of a typical extragalactic field. The missing short spacing information translates into artifacts and high sidelobes that heavily affect, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the final image. SCORPIO is a pathfinder project for the Galactic part of the ASKAP survey EMU, aimed at addressing the technical and scientific challenges that will be encountered observing toward the Galactic plane. In this talk I review the results we have obtained so far on SCORPIO regarding data reduction, data analysis and Galactic source automated classification
