RUSSIAN PRESS AND SARAJEVO ASSASSINATION ON JUNE, 28 1914 (САРАЕВСКОЕ ПОКУШЕНИЕ 28 ИЮНЯ 1914 Г. И ЕГО ПОСЛЕДСТВИЯ В ОСВЕЩЕНИИ РУССКОЙ ПЕЧАТИ)

The article analyses the response of the Russian press to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. The tragedy in Sarajevo attracted more attention of the Russian society to the Balkans, foreign and home policy of Serbia and Austro-Hungary. In the conditions of this new Austro-Serbian conflict the leading Russian publishing houses took the Pro-Serbian position and strongly criticized the Viennese chauvinists for undisguised desire to put their south neighbor in his place. At the same time the Russian press underestimated both the determination of Vienna and the role of Germany in launching the European war
