THE ROLE OF JUDICIARY IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF INDIA

The protection and preservation of the environment is a global issue. It is the concern of all nations. The word environment in its normal meaning relates to the surrounding within us. The world today has become economically richer but has become environmentally poorer than ever. This is because of various factor and the most importantly the technological advancement. The problem of environment pollution is not of new origin.The environmental law has emerged as a core stone in promoting development without any destruction, in an era where there is a high threat to human survival. The proper balance of the ecosystem is the need of the day and the only solution to this great menace is sustainable development. Sustainable development is essentially a policy and strategy for the development. The achievement of ecologically sustainable development depends on the commitment and involvement of all arms of government. Indian judiciary has played a very pious role in the form of judicial activism to implement the mandate of sustainable development. This paper highlights on the active role taken by the judiciary in the form of case laws,guiding principles and policies in implementing and giving effect to the sustainable development goals
