This dataset describes the types and proportions of the different microplastic types in samples collected from the surface waters during the Tara Mediterranean expedition in 2014. The main polymers identified by Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy were poly(ethylene) (67.3 ± 2.4%), poly(propylene) (20.8 ± 2.1%) and poly(styrene) (3.0 ± 0.9%). NThe dataset is related to the publication entitled : Chemical composition of microplastics floating on the surface of the Mediterranean Sea, published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin 174, in January 2022. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.marpolbul.2021.11328
