Les kryptoi spartiates

Spartan Kryptoi. The question of the Spartan cryptia is an old one. It has already been much studied. Scholars have taken two different approaches : a military approach, in which the cryptia is seen as an element of territorial defense, and an anthropological approach, in which the cryptia is an initiation rite. Rather than favoring the second approach, this paper suggests revisiting the first one. The focus is the kryptoi rather than the cryptia. The examination of sources and a discussion of the Athenian kryptoi suggest that the cryptia could be “deritualized” and, instead, more “militarized”. The system could have been introduced after the loss of Messenia in 369.La question de la cryptie spartiate est ancienne. Elle a déjà fait l’objet de nombreuses études. Les savants se sont dirigés dans deux directions : une approche militaire où la cryptie est un élément de la défense du territoire et une approche anthropologique où la cryptie est un rite initiatique. À contre-courant de la deuxième approche, l’article propose de revisiter la première approche. Il s’agit de s’intéresser aux kryptoi plus qu’à la cryptie. L’examen des sources ainsi qu’un détour par les kryptoi athéniens permettent, nous semble-t-il, de « déritualiser » la cryptie pour davantage la « militariser ».
