La monnaie à Sparte

The Coinage of Sparta. S. Grunauer’s work gave the overall picture of Spartan coinage. However, soon after the publication of her book, it became clear that, for the early period, some anomalies needed to be rectified. The present article explores the possibility of achieving a more historically accurate picture of the production of Lacaedemonian coinage, based on more recent numismatic research and my own work in Laconia and on Hellenistic Sparta. Some coins need to be attributed to the 146-148 AD period, curiously absent from S. Grunauer’s classification. Others, such as the tetradrachmae with a young man’s head, need to be reexamined and reattributed. And all these elements have to be related to historical developments. Such is the purpose of this article.Les travaux de S. Grunauer avaient fixé un cadre général pour les monnaies de Sparte. Cependant, dès la parution du livre, il apparaissait que, pour les premiers temps, il y avait des anomalies qu’il fallait revoir. Cet article tente de cerner de plus près, à l’aide des travaux plus récents des numismates, comme à la lumière de mes propres recherches en Laconie et sur Sparte hellénistique, les possibilités d’une plus grande historicité de la production de monnaies lacédémoniennes. Certaines doivent être rendues à la période 146/48, étrangement absente dans le classement de S. Grunauer, d’autres (les tétradrachmes à tête d’adolescent) réexaminées et réattribuées, l’ensemble rattaché aux évolutions historiques. C’est le but de cet article.Christien Jacqueline.
