Although an important marker of collective identity, coinage is often absent from current research on civic identity in Ancient Greece. In those cases where it is mentioned, it is often treated within a framework set by written sources, following the approach of M. I. Finley, with the aim of understanding it as a political tool. The issue becomes rather less simple as soon as coins themselves are closely studied. While cities usually chose with great care the types and legends for their coinage, they sometimes produced types with no relation to local traditions.
