Emmanuel Lévinas only took an interest in aesthetics from time to time. Paradoxically he never ceased to frequent works of art and, more specifically, works of literature. An attempt will be made here to explicitate the ambiguous relationship of the philosopher to literature by considering both his critical activity and his own stylistic work. By returning to the question of language and its foundation, it becomes possible to uncover the main rules of what may be called aesthetic hermeneutics. Its use in the Talmud and in twentieth century literature makes its value clear.
