Readers of Kierkegaard are in general agreement in seeing in the aesthetic stage a simple step destined to be surpassed for a more concrete mode of existence. The A. endeavours here to show that this viewpoint, however correct it may be, is nonetheless reductionist. Aesthetics, as conceived by Kierkegaard in his essay on Mozart's Don Juan, is presented less from the viewpoint of existential indigence than from that of the ontological foundation of a subjectivity of which passion is the final term.
