Levinas et l'universalisme. Premiers éléments pour une critique de la lecture de Benny Levy

If the universal of reason, the True, imposes itself on condition that one accepts rational activity, the ethical universal of the Good, which is experienced through the feelings, is for its part unconditional. Every human being as such accedes to the ethical universal, to the Sense, according to Levinas, and this accession defines an original Jewishness, which precedes all religion, including the Jewish religion. It must be said here that all human beings are Jews. However, a given culture may favour or disfavour this ethical experience, and Levinas always maintains at this level a privilege of the biblical over every other world and hence over the western world, the latter having its excellence in the order of politics and rational knowledge. Hence one must maintain a particularism of Judaism, the culture of which covered the Good, the sense of alterity, of transcendence less than others. However, this particularism does not signify a scission with no link to the rest of humanity: there is not Jerusalem, on the one hand, and Athens on the other, their inevitable war, because all human beings are Jews, but only a tension, by means of which each pole gains by integrating the requirement of the other — a reading of Levinas which the interpretation at work in the final books of Benny Levy does not accept and which it is aimed to bring out here. Tout homme en tant qu'homme selon Levinas accède à l'universel éthique, au Sens, et cette accession définit une judéité originelle qui «précède» toute religion, y compris la juive. Il faut dire ici que tous les hommes sont juifs. Une culture particulière peut toutefois favoriser ou défavoriser cette épreuve éthique et Levinas maintient toujours à ce niveau un privilège du biblique sur tout autre monde et donc sur le monde occidental, ce dernier ayant son excellence dans l'ordre de la politique et de la connaissance rationnelle. Il faut alors maintenir un particularisme du judaïsme dont la culture a moins que d'autres recouvert le Bien, le sens de l'altérité, de la transcendance. Ce particularisme, toutefois, ne signifie pas une scission sans lien avec le reste de l'humanité: il n'y a pas d'un côté Jérusalem et de l'autre Athènes, leur guerre inévitable, puisque tous les hommes sont juifs, mais seulement une tension où chaque pôle gagne à intégrer l'exigence de l'autre — leçon lévinassienne que l'interprétation à l'œuvre dans les derniers livres de Benny Lévy n'accepte pas et qu'il s'agit ici de mettre en relief.Simhon Ari.
