This article examines the congruence between the paradigmatic values of distance education and what the practice demonstrates. This is done by analyzing the educational objectives and pedagogical intent of a distance education system and the characteristics of the instructional materials the same system produced. To illustrate the discussion, the case of Téluniversité is analyzed. The results indicate that despite its innovative educational objective, its practice is guided by an an academic and industrial vision of education. The analysis of its instructional materials leads us to suggest some changes be made in its practice in order to agree with its innovative educational objectives.
