From Gallic to Roman Coins : The Example of the Nord — Pas-de-Calais Region. Through the study of Gallic coins findings on the one hand, and of Roman ones dating from the Republic or the early Empire on the other, one can follow the passage from Gallic currency to Roman currency between the period of the conquest and the middle of the Ist century A.D., and make out five chronological phases. It appears that Gallic gold coins have been in circulation until the beginning of the ist century and bronze ones still later ; the slow penetration of the Roman coins from the Republic and the early Empire accounts for the persistance of Gallic coins in the monetary circulation as well as that of surrogate ones (cut or imitation coins).Roland Delmaire...
