Topographie chrétienne d'Arras au VIe siècle : la Vita Vedasti et les données de l'archéologie.

Christian Topography of Arras in the VIth Century. The Vita Vedasti and the Archaeological Data. For more than ten years, the archaeological excavations carried out by Mr. Alain Jacques in the very heart of the ancient Roman city, have allowed to unearth the Lower-Empire fortification wall, a cult site attributed to Attys and, on the location where the Cathedral Church stood before it was levelled down by the French Revolution, the remains of the late Antiquity ecclesia. These elements throw a new light on the roading of the Vita Vedasti (in its first version) and lead us to a possible interpretation of the data collected in the course of the excavation : the Lower-Empire fortified city, the ecclesia, the domus episcopi, the oratorium. But research is still needed to locate the baptistry and fine-tune the chronology of Saint- Vaast's Abbey Church.Depuis plus de dix ans, les fouilles archéologiques conduites par M. Alain Jacques au cœur de l'ancienne ville romaine ont permis de mettre au jour le rempart du Bas-Empire, un lieu de culte attribué à Attis et, à l'emplacement de la cathédrale, entièrement détruite à la Révolution, les vestiges de l'ecclesia de l'Antiquité tardive. Ces éléments permettent une relecture de la Vita Vedasti (première version) d'où il ressort une possible interprétation des résultats connus par les fouilles : la ville fortifiée du Bas-Empire, l'ecclesia, la domus episcopi, l'oratorium. Mais des recherches sont encore nécessaires pour localiser le baptistère et préciser la chronologie de l'abbaye Saint-Vaast.Christelijke topografie in Arras in de vie eeuw. Sedert tien jaar hebben de opgravingen onder de leiding van Alain Jacobs in het hart van de oude stad heel wat aan het licht gebracht : de vestingmuur uit het Late Keizerrijk, een cultusplaats voor Attis, en op de plaats waar zich de tijdens de Franse revolutie afgebroken kathedraal bevond de overblijfselen van een laat-antieke ecclesia. Aan de hand van die archeologische gegevens kan met de eerste versie van de Vita Vedasti herlezen en er de versterkte stad van het Late Keizerrijk in terugvinden, alsmede de ecclesia, domus episcopi en oratorium. Verder onderzoek is echter nodig om het baptisterium terug te vinden en de chronologie van de Sint-Vaastabdij preciezer te bepalen.Leman Pierre.
