Recherches archéologiques à Bavay, XIII (Basilique civile, 1992)

The development in 1992 of excavations in the eastern wing and in the north-east angle of the basilica of the Bavay forum enabled us to understand better some aspects of the archaeological history of this monument, particularly in its primitive stage («yellow stage»). It appears then that the angle of the building must have contained an extra room, and that the «shops» situated on each side of the centre of the wing had the same depth as this central part but that their floor level was about a metre lower than that of the central part. On the other hand, there existed as early as this «yellow stage» a north portico (which in the later developments kept the same width) and an eastern platform (whose width was reduced in the later stages). With regard to the «pink» and «tricolour» stages of the monument, the results of the 1992 campaign only concern details of the architectural ornamentation. But one could study the foundation on driven posts of a tower of the Lower Empire walls and an interesting mediaeval wall situated on the eastern side of the fortifications.La poursuite en 1992 des recherches dans l'aile orientale et dans l'angle nord-est de la basilique du forum de Bavay a permis de préciser certains points de l'histoire architecturale de ce bâtiment, principalement dans sa phase primitive («état jaune»). Il apparaît ainsi que l'angle de l'édifice devait comporter une pièce supplémentaire, et que les «boutiques» situées de part et d'autre du centre de l'aile avaient la même profondeur que cette partie centrale mais que le niveau de leur sol était inférieur de près d'un mètre à celui de la partie centrale. D'autre part, dès cet «état jaune», existaient un portique nord (qui par la suite a conservé la même largeur) et une terrasse orientale (dont la largeur fut réduite dans les états ultérieurs). Pour les états «rose» et «tricolore» de l'édifice, l'apport de la campagne 1992 ne concerne que des détails du décor architectural. En revanche, on a pu étudier la fondation sur pieux battus d'une tour de la muraille du Bas-Empire et un intéressant mur médiéval situé à l'est de la fortification.Het voortzetten van de opgravingen in de oostvleugel en in de noordoostelijke hoek van de basiliek van het forum te Bavay heeft tot een meer preciese kennis geleid van de bouwgeschiedenis, voornamelijk in de eerste faze (gelé faze). Zo blijkt nu dat de hoek van het gebouw een kamer meer omvatte en dat de «winkels» die aan weerszijden van het midden van de vleugel lagen dezelfde diepte hadden dan het centrale deel, maar dat hun grondpeil een meter lager lag. Van in de «gele faze» heeft er een noordelijke portiek bestaan (die later dezelfde breedte bewaard heeft) en een oostelijk terras (waarvan de breedte later verkleind werd). Voor de roze en driekleurige toestand brengt de graafcampagne in 1992 slechts details uit het architectonisch dekor aan het licht. Daar staat tegenover dat men de funderingspalen van een toren in de omheiningsmuur van het Late Keizerrijk heeft kunnen bestuderen, net als een intéressante middeleeuwse muur ten oosten van de versterking.Hanoune Roger, Muller Arthur.
