De Tourcoing à Roubaix (13e- 16e siècle) : note sur le décalage de l'essor industriel textile

One has known for some time that the development of textile industry in the Roubaix-Tourcoing area in fact dates back to the Middle Ages. Tourcoing has been a centre from the Lys valley cloth manufacture since the 14th century. Roubaix develops but much later. The differences in demography between the two cities is still sharper. Roubaix has remained a village whereas Tourcoing counts 1,357 hearths by 1549, and more than 12,000 inhabitants at the time of the Archdukes. At the beginning of the 17th century, the textile production of the flat land is organized around Tourcoing but also Wattrelos and Roubaix.On sait depuis quelques années que l'essor textile de la région de Roubaix- Tourcong date en réalité du Moyen Age. Tourcoing est un centre de la draperie de la vallée de la Lys au 14e siècle. Roubaix se développe beaucoup plus tardivement. Le décalage démographique entre les deux localités est encore plus net. Roubaix reste un village tandis que Tourcoing compte 1.357 feux en 1549, et plus de 12.000 habitants au temps des Archiducs. Au début du 17e siècle, la production textile du plat pays est organisée autour de Tourcoing, mais aussi Wattrelos et Roubaix.Men weet sedert een paar jaar dat de opkomst van de textiel in de streek van Roubaix-Tourcoing al tot in de Middeleeuwen teruggaat. Tourcoing was een centrum van lakenweverij in de Leievallei in de 14e eeuw. Roubaix ontwikkelt zich pas veel later. Dat ziet men ook in de bevolkingscijfers. Roubaix is nog een dorp als Tourcoing al 1357 haarden telt, in 1549, en in de tijd van de aartshertogen meer dan 12.000 inwoners. In het begin van de 17e eeuw is de textielproductie van het plateland georganiseerd rond Tourcoing, maar ook Wattrelos en Roubaix.Delsalle Paul.
