<strong>Suffering "for Your sake" in Psalms 44 and 69</strong><br /> Suffering "for Your sake" in the Old Testament is often incorrectly interpreted as vicarious suffering. In Psalms 44:23 and 69:8 where this expression occurs, it has a multiple function which excludes vicarious suffering. While the question of the reason and purpose of the suffering remains unanswered because the covenant theology had become a mystery, this expression was implemented as an escape to God's loving-kindness as the only ground for salvation. The problem of innocent suffering is not totally resolved hereby, but the tension between innocence and suffering is relieved and a shift in covenant theology introduced by the use of this expression
