To explain the history of teacher training since the 1960's, it is first important to understand the multiplicity of the stakes and the actors : administrators and reformers, teachers in post, trainers, public opinion. At the beginning of the 1960's, the situation extended the nineteenth century duality with a training in primary school teacher training colleges (écoles normales) organised in a professional way as regard its methods and objectives, while secondary school teacher training was very light. A very strong current was emerging in favour of a reform, as maintaining the status quo led to lack of competence in primary schools and junior high schools.
