Sullerot viewed and analysed 42 French films staging nearly 400 teachers in leading or minor roles. This fictitious and quite unrealistic population is composed of four men for one woman. Primary school teachers are presented as positive, active and disinterested heros in dramatic films. In comic films, secondary school teachers and university professors perform ridiculous, simple, inoffensive characters disconnected from reality, while in dramatic films they are shown as bitter and often mentally disturbed failures.
