The "professional dissertation" was introduced as an important training element for future teachers when IUFM 's were created and has already been the subject of an issue of Recherche et Formation. The point is here to review the present research about it. Is the professional dissertation of training teachers a research work ? It may be doubted and it is not indeed the official aim of the exercise. But nothing either prevents it from being so or from being a research initiation tool.
