Littératie, compréhension et interprétation des textes

The notion of « literacy » is widely used nowadays in Anglo-Saxon countries, as well as in certain French-speaking countries, notably in Quebec, where it is known as « littératie ». This notion has given rise to historical, anthropological, and psycholin-guistic research and has also inspired numerous education syllabuses in the USA. Using an inventory of the studies carried out in this field, we shall ask ourselves in what ways these studies clarify the question of understanding and interpreting texts. Since we are dealing with a positive concept, rather than a negative one, (as is the case with the term « illiteracy », which is used in France), we are able to link social practices, the written language system, and learning. The polysemy of this term also removes the over-simplistic dichotomies which compare, for example, « functional » texts to « non-functional » texts, or « literary » texts to « non-iiterary » texts. Certain theoreticians, however, (notably Oison) seem to utilize this concept of interpreting literacy in an over-simplistic manner : we shall discuss the utilization of this concept from a didactic viewpoint, using the nursery school as our main point of reference.La notion de « literacy » est aujourd'hui couramment utilisée, dans le monde anglo-saxon ainsi que dans certains pays de l'espace francophone, notamment au Québec, sous le nom de «littératie ». Elle a suscité des recherches de type historique, anthropologique ou pyscholinguistique, et inspiré également de nombreux programmes d'éducation aux États-Unis. A partir d'une recension des études menées dans ce champ, on se demandera en quoi elles éclairent la question de la compréhension et de l'interprétation des textes. Le fait de disposer d'un concept positif, et non pas seulement négatif (comme l'est le terme « illettrisme » utilisé en français) permet d'articuler pratiques sociales, système de l'écrit et apprentissage. La polysémie du terme efface aussi les dichotomies trop simplistes qui opposent, par exemple les textes «fonctionnels » aux textes «non fonctionnels », ou encore les textes « littéraires » et « non littéraires ». L' utilisation du concept d'interprétation chez certains des théoriciens de la littératie (en particulier Oison) parait cependant réductrice : elle sera discutée dans une perspective didactique, prenant comme référence principale le niveau Maternelle.Grossmann Francis.
