The notion of « literacy » is widely used nowadays in Anglo-Saxon countries, as well as in certain French-speaking countries, notably in Quebec, where it is known as « littératie ». This notion has given rise to historical, anthropological, and psycholin-guistic research and has also inspired numerous education syllabuses in the USA. Using an inventory of the studies carried out in this field, we shall ask ourselves in what ways these studies clarify the question of understanding and interpreting texts.
