ABSTRACT. Gender relations have played an important role in the development of school systems in Canada. This paper describes and analyzes specific ways in which discriminatory relations were constructed, and subsequently restructured, for women and men teachers in Ontario during the depression years of the 1930s - in particular, in relation to salaries, job tenure, and pensions. Given the recent calls for "restructuring" of schooling and teaching, "lessons" from the 1930s may well prove informative in strategizing for (or against) contemporary change initiatives. RÉSUMÉ.
