ABSTRACT. This study examines undergraduate elementary and music teacher education students' constructions of teaching knowledge and practice. Two vastly different types of institutionalized notions of professionalism present in the two groups are discussed in relation to students' first-time teaching experiences. Emerging out of these two contexts are significant contrasts in how they perceive their identity, function, and role as teachers.
