Individual development is briefly outlined as the interdependent development of five skill areas: language, cognition, social, perceptual-motor, and psycho-spiritual / moral. In the context of this model augmentative communication systems for non-vocal severe1y handicapped people are reviewed. Symbol definition, prerequisite skills, and sorne criteria for the selection of an appropriate symbol system are discussed.
