THE EFFECTS OF POLITICAL AND SOCIOECONOMIC CHANGE ON AN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM (TIBET)

Changes in the political and socioeconomic conditions of a society have an inevitable impact on the system of education. The modification of two systems of education are followed as the result of abrupt political and socioeconomic events in Tibet - the one in the home country under Chinese occupation and the other established by Tibetan refugees in India, Bhutan, and Nepal. The main objective of both systems remains the same: The retention of the Tibetan language and culture. Each system attempts to reach this objective separately while accepting substantial financial assistance from foreign governments. These political and socioeconomic changes in Tibet and their consequent effects on the educational systemprovide a metaphor of what can happen in any society that experiences radical change. RÈSUMÈ Les mutations qui se produisent dans la situation politique et socioéconomique d'une société ont des conséquences inévitables sur le système d'éducation. Nous suivrons la transformation de deux systèmes d'éducation qui est résultée d'événements politiques et socio-économiques très soudains au Tibet - l'un au Tibet sous l'occupation chinoise et l'autre établi par des réfugiés tibétains en Inde, au Bhoutan et au Népal. L'objectif primordial des deux systèmes demeure le même: la sauvegarde de la langue et de la culture tibétaines. Chacun des deux systèmes s'évertue à atteindre cet objectif séparément tout en acceptant l'aide financière substantielle de gouvernements étrangers. Ces mutations politiques et socio-économiques au Tibet et leurs conséquences sur le système d'éducation illustrent à merveille ce qui peut se produire dans toute société qui connaît des changements aussi radicaux
