What is the importance of a book? What lives has it lived? In the heart of UNC's campus, Wilson Library holds a vast collection of rare books. In this thesis I explore five volumes of Latin love poetry, taking a subject often studied as a text from a different perspective. I ask the question: how do these books function as objects? Examining ownership, decoding handwritten annotations, and investigating provenance, I discover diverse stories of tiny erotic gifts, books passed down in North Carolina plantations, and rich sources of inspiration for Renaissance poets.
