Administrative Problems in the Teaching of Religion in the Catholic High Schools of the United States

The administrators of Catholic secondary schools may justly be presumed to have a deep appreciation of the importance of the teaching of religion. The principal is invariably either a priest or a religious, one whose life has been consecrated to the service of God and whose training has emphasized religious ideals. The higher superiors, both the Ordinary of the diocese and the General of the religious community, are still more deeply concerned about this most important .obligation. But a multiplicity of duties, financial difficulties, and a lack of definite organization often hinder its execution and sometimes obscure its paramount importance. It is the purpose of this study to clarify the situation as much as possible, to state the problems concerning religious instruction that confront high school administrators, and to present the available information on them. ..
