Religious sodalities and Catholic Reformation in Soignies : Implicit Persistance of a Popular Christian Faith. In line with all the Hainault towns and more widely with those of the ancient Netherlands, Soignies in the Ancient Régime was home to numerous religious sodalities. In spite of their submission, as early as the beginning of the XVIIth century, to the episcopal authorities, they still kept a certain number of traditional and even profane practices (banquets, fines, etc.) hardly compatible with the principles put forward by Catholic Reformation. Similarly very few innovations in terms of religious practice were introduced. In fact, the bishops' interventions resulted in very few changes, these changes being more theoretical than effective.A l'image de l'ensemble des villes hainuyères et plus largement des anciens Pays-Bas, Soignies abrita sou l'Ancien Régime quantité de confréries religieuses. En dépit de leur soumission, dès le début du XVIIe siècle, à l'autorité épiscopale, elles conservèrent toujours un certain nombre de pratiques traditionnelles, voire profanes (banquets, amendes, etc.) peu compatibles avec les principes propagés par la Réforme catholique. De même, très peu d'innovations se manifestèrent au niveau de la pratique religieuse. En réalité, les interventions épiscopales modifièrent peu de choses, les changements s'avérant plus théoriques qu'effectifs.Religieuze broederschappen en katholieke hervorming in Soignies : het voortleven van een volkse godsdienst. Zoals aile steden in Henegouwen en ruimer in de Oude Nederlanden bood Soignies onderdak aan een groot aantal religieuze broederschappen tijdens het Ancien Regime. Hun onderwerping aan het bisschoppelijk gezag, sedert het begin van de XVIIde eeuw ten spijt, handhaafden zij een aantal traditionele praktijken, zelfs met een profaan karakter (banketen, boeten enz...) die weinig pasten bij de door de Contrareformatie gepreekte vemieuwingen. Van die hervormingen was er tenslotte in de de praktijk van het kerkelijke leven haast niets te zien. De tussenkomst van de bisschoppen leidde slechts naar theoretische veranderingen.Desmette Philippe.
