Le site néolithique et protohistorique du Châtelard de Bourg-Saint-Maurice (Savoie). Habitat perché et zone sépulcrale au pied du col du Petit-Saint-Bernard, dans leur contexte alpin

After the first excavations in 1972-76 and 1984-88, still for a large part unpublished, eleven new surveys were made between 2003 and 2007 on the Châtelard site, Bourg-Saint-Maurice (Savoie, France, at about 900 m altitude), in the foothills of the Little St. Bernard Alpine pass, as part of the European project Interreg III “ Alpis Graia : Archaeology without borders”. The finds and archives from the earlier campaigns were re-examined at the same time as fieldwork was resumed. This article deals with the preliminary results of this work and presents, for the first time, a global approach to the Châtelard site. The Châtelard site consists of four small plateaux, extending behind a series of glacial cross cliffs rising up a steep slope. This site is characteristic of a frequent type of settlement in the great, narrow Alpine valleys, in a geomorphological environment which rarely offers real commanding positions protected on all sides : perched on the hillside, dominating communication routes, protected by the steepness of the slopes and the proximity of deep torrential incisions. The first research conducted by the Aime Society of History and Archaeology revealed, on the downhill side of the lower plateau, two small funerary areas used for several periods over a very long time. Study of the excavation files allowed the position of the surveys to be fairly precisely determined and a plan to be presented of the dozen graves which were examined, sometimes rather summarily, during the 1970s and 1980s. Among these burials, partly undated and which present several kinds of architecture, dimensions and orientation, we note a probable cist grave cemetery similar to the Chamblandes graves, two tombs with mixed architecture radiocarbon dated to the Early Bronze Age, a secondary deposit consisting of cremation remains in an urn dated to the beginning of the Late Bronze Age, and at least one cist from the Early Middle Ages. Recent surveys enabled the extent of the archaeological site to be defined, and revealed exceptionally well preserved protohistoric settlement levels in the upper locus. Analysis of the results and a critical review of the finds resulting from the earlier excavations enable us to propose a chronology of the settlement on the three main plateaux, from the Neolithic to the Early Middle Ages. Lithic and ceramic artefacts dating from the Neolithic have been found on the four plateaux, none of which seem prior to the Late Neolithic. The settlement intensified at the beginning of the Late Bronze Age, revealed by thick occupation levels on the upper plateau. Further important occupations occurred during the first Iron Age, the Roman period and the Early Middle Ages, but the remains are much more poorly preserved. The settlement and use of the burial areas present chronological gaps, which cannot be explained by taphonomic elements alone or by a regional decline in occupation. The Châtelard plateaux seem to have been less inhabited, or even abandoned, during the Middle Bronze Age, the Late Bronze Age 3 and the Late Iron Age. The periodization observed can be compared with data collected by surveys on many hill sites on both sides of the Little Saint-Bernard pass, near the Alpine crossing routes. The Châtelard sequence is one of the longest and most complete of all the sites on both sides of the pass. In our present state of knowledge, the occupation of hill sites seems to have been sooner on the French side, as early as the Neolithic, and at an altitude generally lower than 1000 metres. Settlements developed on the Italian side at higher altitudes, especially from the beginning of the Late Bronze Age, and present strongly contrasting occupation patterns. Many hypotheses are discussed to explain these fluctuations : the control of mineral resources (access to the Beaufortain copper deposit and the closeness of the Arbonne salt spring might have been an important factor since the Neolithic), large scale socio-economic dynamics between north-Alpine and Italic domains in this contact area during the protohistoric period, and the direct control of circulation. The relation between the occupation of hill sites and the control of circulation is often mentioned with regard to sites in a dominating position with natural defences, but is still hard to prove at our observation scale without any clear topographic situation. Transalpine contacts did not stop during the period of abandonment of the sites studied. We should rather consider temporary relocation to more open areas, for example large southexposed areas at the foot of the hills, or the mid-hillside plateaux which are often occupied by existing villages. The funerary practices and material culture of the Châtelard site at Bourg-Saint-Maurice indicate strong relations between both sides of the Alps from the first occupations. Nevertheless, our present knowledge does not permit us to refine the analysis of transalpine relations. The forthcoming study of the Late Bronze Age ceramics should contribute to making new progress. The intensive research conducted on both sides of the Little Saint-Bernard Pass clearly shows that hill sites with long settlement durations are quite rare. The fact that they are frequently found in areas profoundly damaged by present-day urbanization means that they require urgent protective measures.Après de premières fouilles dans les années 1972-1976 puis en 1984-1988, restées très largement inédites, de nouveaux sondages ont été réalisés entre 2003 et 2007, dans le cadre du projet Interreg III «Alpis Graia : Archéologie sans frontière » , sur le site du Châtelard de Bourg-Saint-Maurice (Savoie, France, vers 900 mètres d’altitude) au pied du col transalpin du Petit-Saint-Bernard. Le réexamen des mobiliers et des archives issus des premières recherches a été mené en parallèle à cette reprise des investigations de terrain. Cette contribution livre les premiers résultats de ce travail, et permet de présenter pour la première fois une approche globale de ce site constitué de quatre petits plateaux, qui se développent à l’arrière d’une série de verrous glaciaires, étagés dans la partie inférieure d’un versant raide. Dans un contexte géomorphologique qui n’offre que très rarement la possibilité de véritables positions dominantes protégées sur tous les flancs, le site du Châtelard constitue un exemple assez représentatif d’un type de site fréquent dans les grandes vallées des Alpes occidentales : le site perché dans un versant, dominant les voies de communication et protégé par la raideur des pentes et la proximité d’incisions torrentielles marquées. Les premières recherches menées par la Société d’histoire et d’archéologie d’Aime ont révélé la présence, sur le rebord aval du locus inférieur, de deux petites zones funéraires utilisées à plusieurs reprises pendant une très longue durée. L’examen des archives de fouille autorise un positionnement relativement précis des sondages effectués et permet de présenter le plan de la douzaine de sépultures abordées parfois très sommairement dans les années 1970-1980. Parmi ces inhumations, qui présentent une grande variété typologique, on relève la présence probable d’une petite nécropole de tombes en coffres apparentées aux cistes de type Chamblandes, de deux tombes à architecture mixte du Bronze ancien datée par le radiocarbone, d’un dépôt secondaire en urne de résidus de crémation attribuable à la phase initiale du Bronze final et d’au moins une tombe en coffre datée du haut Moyen Âge. Les sondages récents ont permis d’étendre et de préciser l’emprise du site archéologique. Ils montrent la remarquable conservation de niveaux d’habitat protohistoriques sur le plateau supérieur. L’analyse des résultats et la révision critique des mobiliers livrés par les fouilles anciennes permettent de proposer une chronologie des épisodes d’habitat, qui concernent surtout les trois plateaux principaux. Des indices lithiques et céramiques du Néolithique ont été identifiés sur les quatre plateaux. Les éléments datés avec précision ne semblent pas pour l’instant être antérieurs au Néolithique final. L’occupation connaît une nette intensification à partir du début du Bronze final marquée par la mise en place d’épais niveaux d’habitat sur le plateau supérieur. De nouvelles occupations importantes interviennent ensuite au premier âge du Fer, durant l’antiquité et le haut Moyen Âge mais sont nettement plus mal conservées. La fréquentation de l’habitat comme l’usage des zones funéraires présentent des lacunes qui ne peuvent être expliquées par les seuls aléas taphonomiques ni par une déprise à l’échelle régionale. Le Bronze moyen, le Bronze final III et le second âge du Fer correspondent à des épisodes où les plateaux du Châtelard semblent très peu, voire pas du tout occupés. Le phasage observé est comparé à un ensemble de données collectées sur plusieurs sites perchés installés sur les deux versants du col du Petit-Saint-Bernard, en proximité immédiate de l’itinéraire transalpin. Dans l’état actuel de la documentation les occupations interviennent plus précocement sur le versant français, dès le Néolithique. Elles se développent sur le versant italien, à des altitudes un peu supérieures, surtout à partir du début du Bronze final et présentent alors des évolutions contrastées selon le site considéré. Plusieurs hypothèses sont discutées pour tenter d’expliquer ces fluctuations : contrôle des ressources minérales, dynamiques socioéconomiques à large échelle et contrôle direct des circulations.Rey Pierre-Jérome, Treffort Jean-Michel, De larminat Solenn.
